Ray's Canvas
Bio
About Ray; A Los Angeles native raised in the suburbs of Lincoln Heights. Los Angeles brought many opportunities for the young artist from mural painting to film making. Ray studied at Art Center of Design in Pasadena. He studied under Harry Carmean, whose Old Master's knowledge sparked a desire to communicate visually. With help from film maker Romeo Carey and his father, actor/director Timothy Carey, Ray became a visual effects artist. Some of his work includes Madonna's music video, "Oh Father" and the Universal Pictures 1990 movie "Darkman". Currently living in Santa Barbara, California. The changed environment raised questions in his mind about his identity, spirituality and human experience. Within the last decade, Ray has contributed his artistic services to Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Parish. His oil painting of Saint Juan Diego now hangs as the focal point of a shrine. Additionally, he has restored a majority of statues displayed with in the church. One of the statues, "Christ in the Tomb" dates back to 1854 and is believed to originate in Spain. Since 1992 Ray has worked full-time as a Production Director and Set Designer at the Santa Barbara Channels Studio. Some of his commissioned works include: Santa Barbara Botanic Gardens 80th anniversary. His illustrative ink drawing promoted Patrick Dougherty's outdoor sculpture, "Toad Hill" and three works for Bethel Church of Christ to name a few. Ray's main contribution to the arts has been his own tireless, self-inspired body of work which now numbers in the hundreds and like most true artist his work only now is beginning to make it's way to the public eye. This site is the first effort to shed some light on the work of a true artist.
